The highest bid nearly doubled within the final 30 minutes of the auction.
This 1978 Saab 99 Turbo is, without a doubt, one of the cleanest classic Saabs we’ve ever seen. It is seemingly flawless example of a low-mileage, well-kept Saab 99. And to top it off, the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is matted to a 4-speed manual transmission. It’s no wonder that it became one of the most expensive Saab vehicles to be auctioned off so far in 2018.
In fact, demand for this Saab 99 Turbo was so strong that a bid of $14,750 nearly doubled in the final half hour of the auction on BringATrailer.com. Screenshots taken of the bidding war are shown above.
Kudos to the seller for managing to acquire a vehicle worthy of never-ending praise. Read on to find out why this Saab 99 Turbo was so coveted.
The fresh exterior was repainted back in 1984, and at that time the car was outfitted with louvers in the clamshell hood, a Euro headlight conversion, reupholstered seats, a new headliner, and a fuel accumulator. Prior to the replacement of the accumulator, the previous owner had already replaced the fuel pump, cleaned the fuel tank, and changed the fuel filter. Other maintenance includes new shock absorbers, Bilstein shocks, new sawy bars, tie rod ends, and the steering rack.
It’s worth noting that the owner who just sold the car only drove the car for 1,000 miles while the 99 was in his possession. It was during this time that the interior was refreshed with the aforementioned reupholstering of the seats and new headliner. The seats were done in a period-correct, red cloth with vinyl on the sides. To be honest, the interior is probably our favorite aspect of this 99.
That said, there are plenty of features that classic Saab enthusiasts will appreciate, including the removable rear headrests, which were a dealer add-on, an EMS steering wheel, an optional center console, an OEM tow hitch, and a set of Saab Inca wheels plus a matching fifth spare in the trunk.
It seems this particular Saab has appreciated nicely, considering the original price for the 1978 Saab 99 Turbo was just under $10,000.
